Save Yupi the Polar Bear

Yupi is a female polar bear who was brought to Morelia Zoo in Mexico in 1992 at just a few months old. She came from the wilds of Alaska as an orphaned cub after her mother was killed.

When Yupi arrived at Morelia Zoo, she was placed in a former grizzly bear pen. She still lives in this same enclosure today, which is very small and barren, the surface is made entirely of concrete with no soft surfaces to walk on or lie in. Additionally, Yupi is held in a small holding pen for approx. 17 hours every day, this pen is tiny with no natural daylight.

The daily regime for Yupi is routine and predictable, with little to no environmental enrichment or stimulation. Polar bears require large spaces and a complex natural terrain, giving them choice and control over their daily lives.

Morelia Zoo is located in the central part of Mexico, which means that Yupi is exposed to a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining high throughout the year, dramatically different to the cold climate of Alasaka. Polar bears are not physically adapted to live in hot climates. Under their thick fur their skin is black, facilitating the retention of heat from the sun. They are also equipped with a layer of blubber to help maintain their body temperature; therefore polar bears can easily become overheated, particularly in alien, hot climates.

Yupi is about 20 years old; however polar bears can live for 25-30 years, so she may still have quite a few years ahead of her.

Please sign the petition to the Director of Morelia Zoo, the Municipal Mayor and Governor of Michoacan, expressing your concerns that Yupi’s confinement is unacceptable and that she should be relocated to a better facility in a more appropriate climate.

The History of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated every year on March 17, is a holiday honoring Saint Patrick, the missionary credited with converting the Irish to Christianity in the A.D. 400s. Saint Patrick’s real name was Maewyn Succat. For his first 16 years, Maewyn lived a normal life as the son of a wealthy landowner and magistrate in Britain.

At 16, Maewyn was captured and sold into slavery by a group of pirates who raided his village. After six years of herding sheep, Maewyn escaped, went to France and became a priest, adopting the name Patrick.

During his training, Patrick discovered that his calling was to convert Irish pagans to Christianity. He returned to Ireland, established monasteries across the country, set up schools and churches, and converted many with his winning personality. Patrick carried on a very successful mission for thirty years. When he died on March 17, that day was commemorated as St. Patrick’s Day.

Originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday. In America, in fact, St. Patrick’s Day is basically a time when everyone becomes Irish, wears green and goes out to party.

A mass for a dog

An old Irish farmer lived alone in the countryside with a pet dog which was his only company. He loved the good old animal very much, and he was very sad when one day the poor thing died. So he went to the nearest church and asked the priest to celebrate his poor friend’s funeral.

“Father,” he said, “my dear old dog is dead. Could you be saying a mass for the creature?”

“I am very sorry to hear about your dog’s death,” was the priest’s reply, “but, unfortunately we cannot hold services for animal in this church. However, there’s a new temple down the road. I don’t exactly know what they believe in, but maybe they’ll do something for the animal.”

The farmer said, “Ok, thank you Father. I’ll go to the temple right now… and by the way, do you think 500 pounds is enough to donate for the service?”

At these words the Father said, “My son! Why didn’t you tell me the dog was Catholic?!”
